What To Wear on a Cruise Vacation day, evening & formal night

Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe. The number of formal nights varies based on the length of your cruise.

When boarding your cruise ship, it’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Even if you’re taking a cruise around the Caribbean, it’s smart to take a light sweater or fleece to wear at night when the temperature tends to cool down. After all, you won’t want to get chilly while enjoying the starry sky from your stateroom veranda or on one of the ship’s decks. While it’s perfectly acceptable to stay in your swimsuit while lounging beside the pool, you’ll need a cover-up to walk from your stateroom to the pool, and vice-versa. Keep in mind, depending on where your stateroom or suite is located, you may go through other common areas of the ship (in addition to the elevators) on your way to the pool. Make sure your swim cover-up is something you will feel comfortable in while walking around others.

What Can I Wear to Formal Night? Do I Have to Wear a Tux or an Evening Gown?

Most evenings on a cruise will be casual, smart casual or resort casual dress code. Many cruise lines now allow wearing nice jeans to the main dining room on a cruise, a change from the past. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, sundresses are all appropriate day wear for sea days.

Also, shorter Caribbean sailings, or those with less than 5 nights, will have the most casual atmosphere on a Royal Caribbean cruise - so keep this in mind while packing. Generally speaking, Caribbean cruises are all about relaxing, letting loose, and having fun. In this video I share more information about how to plan your outfits for a 7 day cruise. It’s full of real tips that you can use as you’re planning what to wear on your upcoming cruise. Here’s a list of clothing to bring on a 7 day Caribbean or warm weather cruise.

When preparing for a dinner cruise, it’s important to consider various factors to ensure you have the right attire and essentials. In this section, we will cover some valuable packing tips that will help you make the most of your cruise experience. For women, a waterproof trench coat or a rain jacket paired with pants or a skirt is a practical choice. Choose footwear that is waterproof and has good traction to prevent slipping on wet surfaces.

For shorter cruises, you can focus on packing a few key ensembles for the specific events and dinners you’ll be attending. This allows you to have a well-planned outfit for each occasion while still keeping your luggage light and manageable. The duration of your dinner cruise plays a significant role in determining how much clothing to pack. It’s crucial to consider the length of your trip to ensure you have enough outfits without overpacking unnecessary items.

Plan to pack layers for your Alaska cruise so your wardrobe is versatile for whatever weather you encounter. It’s going to be colder than any Caribbean cruise you’ve done, so packing requires a bit more planning. In all honesty, most Caribbean cruises are very casual for the entirety of the sailing. It’s a fine line between Smart Casual compared to just Casual night, especially on a sun-filled Caribbean cruise. This isn’t to say that you can’t dress to the nines in black-tie or evening gowns; rather, it’s truthfully no longer the standard.

Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeve, button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will work well also. If you'd rather spend your evening in gym shorts and flip-flops, the buffet and other fast casual or counter-service venues will have more relaxed dress codes at night. Or, you can order room service and enjoy dinner in your bathrobe.

Casual, comfortable attire

If you’re by the pool, it’s important to know that bathing suits are not permitted in the buffet or inside the cruise ship, so make sure to pack a cover up. You can also dine in casual pool clothes at the snack bar located next to the pool deck. The dress code on Holland America Line is mostly the "smart casual" evening. For the main dining room, gentlemen will wear a collared shirt or jacket and pants and elegant dress for the ladies such as dresses, skirts, or slacks with blouses in the Gala evenings. Planning ahead for your cruise vacation will help you pack for every moment.

When you go for a long cruise vacation, you will enjoy two formal evenings. Men wear collared shirts with jackets, and women are in their skirts or slacks with blouses or sweaters and dresses. It allows less formality for those formal evenings, but still, jackets are required.

Suits and tuxedos are also welcomed during these nights onboard. Packing for your Caribbean cruise will include bright colors, tropical patterns and plenty of swimsuits. You’ll be sailing in warm climates and spending your day in the sun or at the beach, so you can plan to wear most of your summer and spring clothes.

In total there are five layers of ornate frescos that were painted over when the church was converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule. They were only uncovered during the church’s restoration in the 20th century. The rotunda and the ruins are surrounded by modern government buildings and preserved in a large courtyard that remains open to the public.

For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns. Some cruise lines have “formal” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax. Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses. On Regent Seven Seas cruises, there is only one dress code, and that is Elegant casual.

If you don’t want to dress up for the evening, then you certainly don’t have to do so. If you decide that shorts and a t-shirt are as formal as you want to get, you won’t be alone. Although less common these days, some cruises have business casual nights as well.

They also offer great traction on slippery rocks, shell-ridden beaches and the ship's decks. Themed attire on theme nights is not required for dining and is opt-in fun. If you're traveling with a group, organizing matching costumes or outfits can enhance the fun and make for great vacation photos. Check with your cruise line about which theme nights you should expect. Many cruise lines will have themed evenings or parties where you might want to dress the part. If you're attending a themed cruise (such as a gay cruise or music cruise), be prepared for costume parties on multiple nights.
